About Blomdahl Piercing

Blomdahl ear piercing is a medical-grade system designed with safety, hygiene, and long-term skin health in mind. Unlike traditional piercing methods, Blomdahl uses sterile, single-use cartridges and medical plastic or titanium earrings that are specifically developed to minimize the risk of allergic reactions and skin irritation. Every step of the process—from cleansing to piercing—is performed using a “no-touch” technique, meaning the earrings and equipment never come into direct contact with hands, further reducing the risk of infection.

What sets Blomdahl apart is its thoughtful design for even the most sensitive skin. The starter earrings are made from materials commonly used in medical devices, making them an excellent option for children, individuals with eczema or sensitive skin, or anyone who has had reactions to traditional jewelry in the past. The system also allows for gentle, precise placement, ensuring a comfortable experience and optimal healing.

At Healing Arts Pediatrics, we chose Blomdahl because it aligns with our commitment to safe, evidence-informed, and child-centered care. Ear piercing is treated as a medical procedure, not a retail experience—performed in a calm, supportive environment with careful attention to your child’s comfort, emotional readiness, and overall well-being.

Is gun piercing safe?

There is a lot of information online suggesting that needle piercing is inherently safer than “gun” piercing, but this often reflects how piercing is performed in retail settings—not the safety of the device itself. The Blomdahl system we use is very different from traditional mall-style piercing guns. It is a medically designed, single-use, fully enclosed system that never comes into contact with hands or reusable parts. Each earring is housed in a sterile cartridge, and the piercing is performed using a gentle, controlled mechanism that prioritizes hygiene and precision.

From a medical standpoint, safety comes down to sterility, technique, and aftercare—not simply whether a needle or device is used. Blomdahl piercing follows a “no-touch” protocol, uses medical-grade materials, and is performed in a clinical environment with appropriate skin preparation. This significantly reduces the risk of infection and irritation, which are the most important considerations in ear piercing.

It’s also worth noting that for infants and young children, a quick, controlled piercing method can often be less distressing than a longer procedure. Our approach is always centered on minimizing discomfort while maintaining the highest standards of safety. At Healing Arts Pediatrics, we have chosen Blomdahl because it offers a well-studied, medically grounded approach that aligns with how we think about all procedures: clean, precise, and supportive of healthy healing.

Are there any requirements for piercing?

For optimal safety & minimizing trauma, we request the following:

  • Infants be older than 2 months but less than 12 months, and have received a vitamin K injection at birth (to minimize bleeding risk).

  • Children be 5 years or older.

We do not pierce children outside of these age windows due to greater risk of movement and trauma during the procedure.

We also offer piercings for adults, but only standard piercings of the lower ear lobe.
